The unique rock formations merge in crystal clear waters of the Atlantic. It is in the Top 10 most beautiful beaches in Europe according to Michelin Guide and in 2019, the Golden Beach award by CNN.
The first “owners” of the hill were the Visigoths, then the Romans (1st century). In the 8th century was occupied by the Moors, who expanded it. In the 13th century, it was taken by the Portuguese.
The cathedral was built in 1189, with the conquest of the Castle by the Portuguese. Most part of the building is from the 15th century, with a Gothic architectural style.
From the 16th century, the entire chapel has been lined with human bones and skulls. It’s one of the few examples of the Rococo movement in sacred art in Portugal.
